Project Tango Youth Initiative

Several projects are underway to promote tango to young folks (teenagers thru college age) as follows:
  1. Mitra Martin from LA has put together a youth tango education proposal and presented it to various schools in California with some positive feedback so far...   In the near future (2005) we are hoping that this proposal will be accepted and teaching tango to youth will begin at one or two schools (perhaps in the LA and/or Oakland school systems).
  2. Homer taught tango to youth as part of the previous two Summer Dance Camp Programs (2003, 2004) held annually at The Beat, Berkeley, CA.   These week long sessions consist of an hour of tango each day where the youth are introduced in a fun way to tango improve and choreography.
  3. Starting in 2005 we will attempt to start a weekly youth tango class at The Beat...   Much interest has already been expressed by the youth and several parents.
  4. Special "youth tango scholorships" to help out young folks who really want to dance.   Two recent students have included the brother and sister duo Christopher and Alessandra Vejby.   Homer performed tango (several improvised demos) with Alessandra as part of her high school final project requirement "to learn and present a dance form of her choice."
  5. Currently working with students from Caltech University and Occidental College to build student run tango clubs.
